JOHN FORTUNE

John Fortune born in 1773 in England. He married Katherine (Kate) Young (Younger). Kate was born 1780 in Fishwick Mains, Hutton Parish, Berwickshire, Scotland and was christened 6 Aug 1780 in Hutton Parish, Berwickshire, Scotland. John and Kate had nine sons. James, born in England, Archibald, John, Chirnside Parish, Berwickshire, George, Thomas, Alexander, Robert, William/Carr?, David, were born and baptized in Buncle & Preston Parish, Berwickshire. I have no record of a Carr b. June 16, 1819, who shows up in several genealogy charts.

The family came to America in 1788 and lived in the Essex-Westport area of New York State from 1818/19 until about 1841. During this time apparently Kate died. They moved to Nicholville, St., Lawrence County, New York, and according to the 1850 census, John was believed to have died between 1854-56. There is no cemetery record in Nicholville for him, even though others in the family are buried there.

Information from Ruth Armstrong:

Belonged to the Scotch Prsbyterian church in Scotland
Came to the USA in 1819 on the brig NORTHUMBERLAND from Leith
to St. John, New Brunshwick, Cananda. Listed in the Essex USA census taken in June 1820.

Since the family had reached St. Lawrence Co in 1818, the sons had scatterd by 1884. Most of them had gone to Esesx Co in Eastern NY. John had gone a short distance into Canada. George settled in Michigan. Thomas had been in Maryland and Illinois before he ended up in Kansas. Alexxander had gone to Illinois. After his death, his family moved west into Iowa.

From Wanda Woodall:

Anyway I am right now transcribing some notes and old things and I ran across these notes on the cemetery at New Hartford, Iowa which you will find in northeast Iowa. It is in Fairfield Township, Grundy County. The cemetery is well kept but back away from the road. It is close to the farm where Abigail and her family moved after Alexanders death in 1866, one might wonder if they already had purchased the farm when he died. It has been said that his body was moved there later, whether that is true I don't suppose we will never know but John, your ancestor and mine was William must have gone along right after the war as they both married there and lived side by side or in the same household I believe in 1870. We know that Orlen Royce had just moved there just before that. And you know that your John went on to So Dakota before 1880 along with the Royces who were well known in the one community there. Anyway to get on with these cemetery notes..

I have Willliams and his Volunteer enlistment framed over my desk. They both listed their occupation as miner but can't recall where they joined the Colorado Cavalry at.. I am wondering if you have any proof of William being a prisoner as his records do not reflect that but it was rumored, Another thing I noted on those pages was where Abigail died, it was at the home of her daughter Lenora Bauer, some where I have some new updates on the Bauer family, when I find will send. Thanks, Wanda
