George Harrison Means

George Harrison Means was born on February 24, 1843 in Hoopole County, Indiana. He was a member of the 83rd Infantry, Illinois volunteers. He was a Private in Company H. He enlisted on August 7, 1862 and mustered out on June 26, 1865. The 83rd Infantry was organized at Monmouth, Illinois in August, 1862 by Colonel A. C. Harding and disbanded June 26, 1865. Discharge and final pay was at Chicago, Illinois.

He was married to Amanda Ellen Lionberger on Dec 29, 1867. George and Amanda had nine children. He died on Jan 5, 1914 in Protection, Kansas.

Florence Esther MEANS

Florence Esther Means was born on January 22, 1874 in Great Bend, Kansas. She married Rolleigh Adkins Petty The Petty family on January 7, 1896 and lived in Jonesborough, Arkansas. Her husband Rolleigh worked for a mechanical contractor and was a plumber. They had three children, Lillian Annetta, Rollie A. and George. In 1904 the family moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, where Florence and Rolleigh separated.

The family divided, Rollie went to Oregon with an uncle and Florence, Lillian and George moved to Hoisington, Kansas where Florence ran a 14 room boarding house. She married for a second time to Loyal Kelley a marriage which did not last long. In 1912 they moved to Great Bend, Arkansas where the Means lived, then to Texas where they had a boarding house for a short while. In 1918 they moved to Suisuin, California where Florence and Lillian worked for the telephone company for one year. Minnie Means, Florence's sister, lived with them for a while in Suisun. The next year they moved to Hanford, California, also working for the telephone compnay and finally moved to Palo Alto, California in 1919.

After her children were raised Florence became an active club member with various organizations and her church. She died on March 7, 1954 in Mountain View, California.


Lawrence Alber MEANS

Lawrence Alber Means was born in Carthage, Illinois on May 24, 1871. When he was a small boy his family took up a homestead near the town of Jetmore, Hodgeman County, Kansas.. After proving up the Hodgemon County homestead, the family moved to Jonesboro, Arkansas where Lawrence entered the contracting business. He was a born carpenter and builder as were his father and grandfather before him. In 1891 he met his wife Phebe, introduced by his sister Florence. Phebe Luella Rafferty was born On Oct 19, 1870 in Hillsboro, Ohio. Lawrence and Phebe were married on July 3, 1892 at his Uncle Billy Crowder's home in Jonesboro in Arkansas.

Lawrence, his father George and uncle Will Means went into partnership of G. H. Means & sons. In 1895 Lawrence built a new house for his family which was know by the family as the "Little green house". The firm built many buildings and fine home in Arkansas and Western Tennessee, churches and fine Colonial mansions.

In 1904 Phebe contracted pneumonia and malaria, and her doctor advised her to move out of Arkansas, so the family decided to move to Kansas. Lawrence bought a wagon and a team of horses which he made into a covered wagon with beds in it for all. So in April of 1904 the family left Jonesboro in the covered wagon for western Kansas.

Phebe Luella died on Jan 31, 1955 in Eugene, Oregon and is buried in the Resthaven Cemetery in Eugene.
